We work in this field because we believe audio is powerful and personal. Voices are important. Storytelling is important. Art is important. Our work helps us reflect on our lives and engage with the world around us. And we love doing it.

We started our own company because we wanted to operate a business founded on the principles of trust, transparency, and fairness. Our goal is to affect positive change in the industry by building creative relationships and using our collective resources to create opportunities for others.

What’s a Worker-Owned Cooperative?

Mumble Media is a worker-owned cooperative. 

Worker cooperatives are businesses that are driven by their values and prioritize operating in ways that benefit their workers and the broader community. At a worker cooperative—unlike at a traditional company—the worker–members take part in the business’ profits, oversight, and management. This worker participation and decision-making uses democratic practices. 

So what does this look like for Mumble?

  • In any year where the company profits, our worker–members receive a share of those profits as dividends, based on how many hours we’ve worked.

  • No one is unilaterally “in charge.” We elect positions like CEO and CFO for 2-year terms, and we rotate who serves them. We also have committees that oversee key areas like finance or production.

  • Regardless of what positions people hold, all members have an equal vote as members of the Board. Decisions that affect our business are made democratically. 

  • We prioritize the well-being of our employees in every decision we make, whether it’s what benefits we offer or whether to take on a challenging project.
